Virtual Visions 99
This series
was produced over several years, leading up to a solo show at the Colville
Place Gallery, London, in September 1999.
A number of the pieces derived from the Programmed == Damned series,
and, as the software was developed to include a range of new features,
new pieces were added, making a total of 24 pictures in all.
A principle
concern throughout the series is to work as directly as possible with
light, or at least to give an appearance of this. At its simplest and
most profound, the visual arts are not about light as a medium for communication
but about light itself. When one strips away all the superstructure of
language-mediated conceptualisation, one 'becomes the light by which one
sees'. Light then becomes a living entity, or perhaps one should say the
living entity.
One of the
technical innovations in this series was the introduction of depth of
field effects, achieved by using a kind of z-buffer. Others included random
perturbation of objects, glow effects, and tools for accurate model-building.

a tiny fraction of the full resolution and detail of the Digichrome final
prints. This series has been produced at resolutions from 3000 x 2000
to over 6000 x 3000.
