Incompatibility is the condition that arises when things are not working together. Given the current worldwide crises, be they political, financial, technological or environmental, it may seem as if incompatible elements are everywhere. Ironically, it is the supposedly ever-more compatible media-scape that renders such crises visible. Where do incompatibilities arise and how are they integrated in a world-order predicated on convergence, but also leading to divergence?

The festival includes exhibitions, competitions, conferences, film and video programmes, live performances and a publication series called 'transmediale parcours'. Moreover it cooperates with club transmediale (CTM), which deals with electronic music and club culture.

CTM.12 – SPECTRAL

Various venues, Berlin

With an extensive program of concerts, discourses and an exhibition space, CTM.12 – Festival for Adventurous Music and Related Arts is appropriating the festival theme SPECTRAL to explore the current reemergence of all things ghostly and dark in experimental music, avant-pop, and art – and to speculate about its possible causes and inherent potentials.

The thirteenth edition of the Festival will be held from 30 January to 5 February 2012. As always, CTM runs parallel to and in cooperation with Berlin’s festival for art and digital culture, transmediale, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2012.

In addition to a comprehensive music program at HAU, Berghain, Passionskirche, Gretchen, Kater Holzig and Horst Krzbrg, a discourse series developed in collaboration with the philosopher, psycho-historian and author Andreas L. Hofbauer will address the festival’s theme by pursuing questions concerning art, theory, and music.

Ghosts Off the Shelf is an exhibit created by the curator, art critic, and architect Thibaut de Ruyter at the Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien, and explores the artistic use of the exponentially growing capacities of technical archives and their “inherent ghosts”. The exhibit opens on 27 January as part of Vorspiel, a comprehensive partner program within which a number of independent Berlin art, music, and media spaces will present their activities.

Vorspiel

Art / sound / digital culture at 21 venues across Berlin

transmediale and CTM's Vorspiel is a pre-festival program where over 20 partner venues invite you to a series of exhibition openings, performances, artist talks, and special events that take place beyond   the main venues of either festival.

Vorspiel will take place on the weekend prior to both festivals, from Thursday 26 – Sunday 29 January 2012, at independent organizations, galleries, project spaces and other venues across Berlin. The Vorspiel program partners have been selected by transmediale and CTM   according to one of the following criteria: content that relate to the in/compatible and/or Spectral thematic frameworks of the festivals, key collaboration partners, and high artistic quality. Experience some of Berlin's best experimental arts, music and sound via this unique, pre-festival weekend.

The exhibition is a continuation and a further exploration of an ongoing dialogue that seeks to descry the cultural aspects of our mobility, the future of our mobility and the new spaces thus created or altered as a consequence.

Through the positions of sixteen international artists from various backgrounds, such as visual art, new media art and performance, the show is a provocative staging of the role electronic networks play in transforming our conceptions of time, space and distance. In a variety of formats or platforms, such as installation, video, performance, painting, ‘Apps’, maps and open-source collaboration, these artists’ projects visualise a current of developing strategies lobbying for a position of awareness, observation and engagement within the sovereign as well as restrictive field of our ‘new’ spatial condition(s) and conditioning.

Within that (or outside of that), unravel many questions and provocations: How shall we understand, or rather, how can we even enunciate, the new space that arises in the convergence of online and offline? ; What does this do to one’s perception of time and space? ; When every corner of the earth is mapped and within one’s digital grasp, how is one’s physical and conceptual sense of distance and space affected? ; How does the omnipotent presence of our virtual mobility effect the movement of a body in a landscape and what does it indicate? ; How does the ubiquity of mobile technology and its media alter our own mobility?

Frances Stark - My Best Thing

Frances Stark (American, b. 1967) is a Los Angeles-based artist and writer whose work explores image-making and the written word. Known for her works on paper that often reference the acts of drawing and writing, Stark also makes videos, sculptures, and live performances that are suffused with self-doubt, speculation, and vulnerability. She regularly draws from popular culture, literature, and her own personal life, often exploring expectations and assumptions about gender that inflect her identity as a woman, artist, teacher, and mother.
